The Perry is of the Lewis and Clark class of fleet replenishment ships. The class that they replaced (the Kilauea class, which included the Kiska) was more commonly referred to as "ammunition ships". Near the end of my deployment aboard the USS Kitty Hawk in 1984, we spent more than 24 hours alongside the Kiska while offloading the contents of the carrier's substantial magazines.

Since the Perry was heading to drydock in Portland, she was almost certainly empty of cargo, but my guess is that when she's ready for business, her primary cargo is bombs, missiles, rockets and other deadly stuff.
