If you've been to Portsmouth or Southsea recently you will probably have seen something that bears a passing resemblance to an oil rig appearing in and around the harbour!

This photo was uploaded by John Scriven

The "rig" is Deep Diver 1 - a jackup barge owned by Furgo Seacore.

Deep Diver 1 is taking 27 core samples from the sea bed ahead of a major dredging project in 2014 to accommodate the navy’s two new 65,000-tonne carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.

The barge is moving around quickly and is spending around 48 hours in each location.

It's around half way through the six week project currently.

You can follow progress on Ship Finder - Deep Diver Vessel Track

The images taken below show Deep Diver 1 lit up and also explains how she is moving around so quickly!

Graham Alton

We were very saddened to learn that Graham Alton passed away recently.

Graham was a wonderful friend to a great many of us here.

We will miss him.

Our thoughts are of course with his family and friends.
