Home of Plane Finder, Ship Finder and more

Hi, folks,

I have recently found this site as an aviation photographer (rank amateur), and it has interested me in shipping photography. I know nothing about it and was wondering about protocols for photography around ports. I would prefer to get fairly close, rather than use a long lens for something out at sea. Any advice would be welcome.

I know my way maybe not the proper way, but I get as close as I can until someone says Im not allowed, then politely apologise and refit the zoom lens. Obviosly if theres signs saying 'prohibited area' its not worth the risk, but as for Jettys and car parks I cant see the problem. thats just my way..... not sure if its the right way..:P

Thanks Steve. Much the same as aviation photography, then. I'll give it a try next time I'm near a port.

That's good advice, Steve.  I used to do a lot of night photography in the Ports of Los Angeles, and Long Beach.   Sometimes I was stopped before I could set up the tripod.Occasionally I was "detained".  I found it useful to carry a portfolio to show.  It became a real hassle and so I haven't done it for awhile.

I like to get up close and personal for the best shots but if the sign says ""Keep Out" do just that. I've only been followed once by a uniformed federal cop. I look for the public viewing areas like ferry landings and passenger terminals as they can sometimes give a good view of the other berths. My best spots are on the breakwaters of harbour entrances however. These are often public. See http://my.pinkfroot.com/page/shipspotting-fremantle-australia

More people should contribute to the "Spotting" pages.
