The Elida V sailing ship moored in Lowestoft. Interesting that the ‘V’ is not on the bow as there is another sailing vessel also called Elida. She’s been here for a few days now. It’s odd, I don’t know much about yachts but the rear mast appears bent back ?? I’ve seen it from several angles and it’s definitely bent - maybe someone with more knowledge could enlighten me.

    • Hi Howard, yes that was interesting info from Jack. I didn’t realise till I got home that I’d missed the top of the main mast off ! Trouble is, although it doesn’t show in the picture, it was raining hard and very windy, having got quite wet the first time I decided this pic was good enough !
  • Nice one, found this info
Perfectly normal to be raked back a little, many are designed that way. Some early racing yachts had masts raked back as much as 15 degrees. Some modern rigs the mast is designed to have a slight curve aft, often adjustable in a racing rig to allow for a fuller or flatter main for changing conditions. Some traditional working boats like the Brixham Trawler had forward raked masts, but this is very rare now.
    • Thanks for that Jack, I must admit it’s the first yacht I’ve seen like that !
