I was sad to find the R/V Hero (or what was left of her) sitting on the bottom of the Palix River at Bay Center, Washington yesterday. She sank about three weeks ago after years of attempts at restoring and preserving her failed.
She was a research vessel out of Palmer Station, Antarctica from 1968 to 1984. Certainly a one-of-a-kind vessel, she had twin-diesel propulsion, but could also carry sails for silent operations. Her hull was of oak, but was reinforced with greenheart for icebreaking.
No registration info for this one, as she's been idle since 2008.
