The "Bankura" was a cargo ship of 7,274 dwt delivered by Harland & Wolff's Govan Yard to the British India Steam Navigation Company in 1961. She was one of five sister vessels, the other four being "Bulimba", "Bamora", "Barpeta" and "Bombala" and they were all employed on the Company's route from Australia via India to the Persian Gulf.
