July 17, 2016. Canadian Warplane Heritage’s famed Avro Lancaster Mk. X (Civil Registration: C-GVRA), in flight over the Oakville, Ontario waterfront. One of only 2 airworthy Lancasters currently, she was built at Victory Aircraft, Malton in July 1945. Referred to as the “Mynarski Memorial Lancaster”, in memory of P/O Andrew Mynarski who was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for gallantry She usually flies in the colours Lancaster KB726 – VR-A, which flew with RCAF No. 419 (Moose) Squadron. But, for the summer of 2016 she was repainted as Lancaster KB895 – WL-O "Lady Orchid" of the wartime RAF 434 Squadron. WL-O survived the war and flew with the RCAF until 1947 when she was struck off and scrapped. Of interest is that the centre section of our airworthy C-GVRA comes from the scrapped WL-O.
