Sir David Attenborough leaving Cammell Laird shipyard 21/10/20 for the last time. She will be stationed at Holyhead for trials in the Irish Sea and The Arctic and then positioned in the Antarctic. She is the largest civilian ship built in the UK in 30 years. (Boaty McBoatface was a possible name)

      The vessel has been strengthened according to the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Unified Requirements for Polar Class Ships. Her ice class, Polar Class 4, is intended for year-round operation in thick first-year ice which may include old ice inclusions. However, her propulsion system is only rated for Polar Class 5 which is intended for medium first-year ice.

      Interesting question ! I think it is designed to withstand ice but not sure as a research ship it is a real icebreaker.
